Youth Crime Awareness

The workshop attracted attendance of over 100 children and youths of which the majority are directly under GAOS as Orphaned and Vulnerable Children (OVCs). Considering the phenomenal increase of incidences of juvenile crime coupled with the increasing exposure of children to users and peddlers of drugs within the community, it was prudent to engage this workshop in order to inform, discuss, instruct and train children to become knowledgeable in understanding an environment created by crime and drug abuse. The concerns of juveniles increasingly engaging in crime inspired the leadership of GAOS to seek relevant partnership with key experts in matters of crime such as the Botswana Police Services as well as minders like the Urban Youth Against Crime in order to form a common session with the children with whom a majority are Orphaned and vulnerable and lacking parental guidance on matters of criminality and self-responsibility. From the beginning children participated with a lot of excitement, enthusiasm and attention through acting drama and songs about crime and drugs, making contributions as well as raising questions and answers.

The workshop proved useful, educative and it was indeed what our kids needed especially across Botswana considering our present environment. As a strategy of preventing crime, it will enable kids to utilize what they have learnt to inculcate valuable principles as they grow into adulthood. In conclusion, GAOS with all its minders commit to furthering the successes achieved in this forum in helping to raise responsible citizens, tackling youth (juvenile) crime and reducing the fear effects generated by increasing trends of crime, drug abuse and social violence among the youth through community mobilization; crime, drugs and HIV/AIDS awareness forums; as well as join hands with law enforcers, parents, teachers and the community in the fight against drug abuse and crime because without your input, police alone cannot make Botswana a drug free country by 2036.
