Reading Club
Prescribed books by Ministry of Education – Percy Madikwe (GAOS President/Founder) The aim of my book writing is to provide guidance and bring hope to those who are hopeless, to educate and inform the nation. I managed to achieve my goal, and within the space of time I was able to author four books in Setswana language, “Leisong 2 & 3”, “Pelo e Setlhogo” Cruel Heart and “Boleo” Sin (novels). Since the inception of GAOS, we have donated many books to the community we serve, the children of our organization are being encouraged to study and we also assist them with school work during their reading club session. The aim is to see their school performance improve. This noble initiative has made a positive difference in the lives of orphans and vulnerable children as they are able to do well at school. Pelo e Setlhogo prescribed for a primary school audience tells the story of two young brothers,Tshenolo and Thero, orphaned by HIV/AIDS.
The principal underlying themes are HIV/AIDS-related stigma, discrimination and ignorance. The book follows the hardships suffered by the two siblings after their mother’s passing from the scourge. The surviving father and stepmother abuse the two who eventually desert and opt for street life. The paternal grandmother also rejects the siblings under the stereotype that they are also infected in like manner to their deceased mother. Pelo e Setlhogo also examines the multi-dimensional characteristics of stigma and clearly captures the distinction between stigma, internal and external discrimination.
Boleo provide prescriptive examples for the readership for positive behavioural change and how it benefits the individual as an HIV prevention and personal improvement mechanism. The book establishes links with contemporary social life in an era characterized by HIV/AIDS and retrogressive traditional belief systems, showing the incompatibility between the two and awakening the audience to the dynamics of society. As Botswana’s HIV/AIDS affliction threatens to bring about social dislocation, it also shows the consequences of intergenerational sex and commercial utilization of sex to this matrix.
The other two are an anthology of short stories entitled: “Leisong 2” and “Leisong 3”. The books encourage a reading culture, educating on manners and assisting children understand the environment they live in better. The coverage on consequences of disobedient behavior immensely helps the children to distinguish between good and evil. The Ministry of Education Curriculum Development Unit prescribed these literary works, published by Botsalano Press Publishers for use in Primary Schools.
