PyschoSocial Support Camps

Rationale

Young people across different parts of the country are facing different types of challenges such as moral decay, unemployment, alcohol & drug abuse, poverty, teenage pregnancy, poor career choices, idleness, etc. The kids from Bontleng, New Canada, New Naledi, Old Naledi and White City are not an exception. These are challenges which are not only existing in communities, but they are challenges which are gradually growing and cascading down to different younger age groups. Should these trends not be interrupted, the future of many young people will be affected, and by extension, ultimately the future of the nation of Botswana and the continent of Africa will also be affected. There is need for different circumvention programs which will wage war against these pandemics which are soon to wipe destinies of young people if not attended to in the soonest possible. Our organization (GAOS), is one of the organization which are deliberate and intent towards adding value to the lives of young people through different youth programs which will shape the lives of young people.

Objectives

Gaos carries a mandate to empower the young people in the less privileged communities. For these reason, it has for the past 10 years been working with kids from different communities including Bontleng, White City, Naledi and New Canada in Gaborone Central. The organization held a camp on this aforementioned date under the following objectives:

  • To provide psychosocial support
  • To help the kids understand the importance of self reliance
  • To help the kids to understand the future life and how to get ready for it
  • To help young people develop the spirit of team work to work together in tackling challenges they are facing in their individual lives.
  • To identify and nurture talents that these young kids posses and encourage them to invest in growing those talents to see possibilities of building careers around them
  • To foster self discipline and self awareness in the lives of young people
  • To raise a generation of a peculiar type of leaders

The Children Attending the Camp

The children who attend the camps come away with critical knowledge, skills and attitudes that will serve them for the rest of their lives. They learn about their country’s environment and how to conserve it; they learn about healthy lifestyles and HIV prevention; they develop a new-found sense of self-confidence and self-esteem, and learn the importance of resourcefulness, perseverance and hard work; they learn how to effectively communicate with other children and adults; they learn how to develop positive attitudes that will keep them HIV-free and help them to constructively interact with the world around them; they learn how to cope with and come to terms with the trauma and grief in their lives. They meet new people who may become life-long acquaintances. They develop new friendships. They get a chance to relax and have fun. They go away with a happier outlook on life.
