Kids Club
This initiative is currently the main focus of GAOS as children are now mobilized to attend club programs and activities and are served with basic snacks during the session. The kid’s club was officially began on the 20th January 2007 at Bontleng Community Hall after a meeting held with the Community stakeholders. The meetings with the community were held in order to introduce the organization and its objectives to the Community and give a rundown of activities the Kids Clubs will entail, so that they can help GAOS to bring the Children to participate in a series of psychosocial support activities such as life skills camps. This effort also made it possible to engage the OVCs to participate in awareness campaigns through invitations and involvement in commemorating intra-global occasions such as the World AIDS Day, Human Rights Day and such other occasions. The Children estimated to be around 200, participate in Kid’s Club indoor and outdoor games and activities that will enable them to develop their physical and mental capacity and promote team work. By way of introduction, these children are mainly orphaned and vulnerable children who are under the guidance and mentorship of a trained pool of psychosocial support volunteers brought together under GAOS initiative.
The idea of forming this clubs was due to the fact that we realized that Children encounter problems when they are left to themselves. Some of these problems involve behavioural mischief leading to criminal offence. Kid’s Club was established to help protect the mostly neglected OVCs from visible and invisible risks that they may likely expose themselves to without any adult guidance. Because children get bored and end up getting involved in things that can endanger their lives, for instance they end up seeking emotional and mental consolation in the wrong places of entertainment such as in alcohol places or shebeens, where they spend too much time with the wrong people – copying what they do or going to an extend of learning vulgar language from them. Besides, little ones play everywhere with anything and without anyone’s supervision they may end up playing with used condoms – as balloons and handling broken glasses carelessly thrown by drunkards, putting their lives at a greater risk. Kid’s Club helps GAOS to closely monitor the behavioural progress of these children.
It is our believe that orphaned children in particular should be mentored to behave well and their complaints be attended to, because they often feel profoundly isolated due to their unmet needs through understanding, patience, love and kindness as they work through the depressing feelings of grief and sadness as they often are made to feel different from other children in the household, whom they believe are treated better. Sometimes they act out their feelings by behaving rudely or inappropriately or by withdrawing from family members. There are other children who come from homes where violence is the order of the day mainly perpetrated by the parents or guardians. These children often feel lonely, scared and sad. Children can be hurt if they come between the abuser and the abused. Therefore the whole idea of forming this clubs for children near the communities where they leave is to:
