Job Shadowing
“We are all born with the potential for greatness. You and I can build lives of greatness. Greatness is an open game, available to anyone who is willing to grow. It depends how determined and serious you are to reach to the top’” ReadytoWork – Facilitator. As part of a comprehensive delivery of services for orphans and vulnerable children in the community that GAOS operates in. 55 youths from GAOS were invited to be trained through the Absa program called ReadytoWork. Since the inception of GAOS, our aim has been to eradicate poverty and reduce unemployment and crime in our society, to build a nation that they’d definitely carve ways to be self-sufficient. An economically independent society is the stepping stone to combined productivity that leads to an economic growth of the nation on a whole. The youths were empowered on the four modules of ReadytoWork, Money skills, Work Skills, Entrepreneurial Skills and People Skills.
Through the “ReadytoWork” program, graduates were placed into quality formal employment or job shadowing through a cycle of 6 weeks. The aim of job shadowing is to place youth in job opportunities enabling them to receive work experience that is necessary for their economic strengthening. Suitable hosts or companies were identified and the placement we done based on the area of interest of the graduate or interns. Job shadowing helps interns to understand the relationship between what they are learning and how that is being applied in the work fields that they have chosen.
It also helps them realize how to dress professionally, the importance of punctuality, how to solve complex problems and how they can work with other members of their team, how their experience might relate to everyday problems in the office. The ReadytoWork Training and Job Shadowing is one of the programs that has helped many of our youths in GAOS. We have witnessed tremendous life transformation for young people, who benefited a lot from the job shadowing. The majority of them have expressed their gratitude for being given the opportunity to grow and better their lives.
When asked how they are going to apply what they have learned during their job shadowing, they said, they now see life in a different way and what seemed to be a stumbling block in life has turned into a blessing in their lives. Others succeeded in opening their own businesses, while there are those who have been hired either permanently or temporarily. GAOS team were also trained so that they can be able to facilitate the ReadytoWork and train more youths in the community they serve.
